Although the OH Eta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded in 1948, our local history can be traced back nearly 26 years earlier to the founding of Phi Sigma Phi, a local fraternity established at Miami University in 1922.
After much early success, the membership of Phi Sigma Phi would petition a new national fraternity, Theta Upsilon Omega, and later become the Beta Beta chapter of their prospering organization in January 1925. Theta Upsilon Omega began not much earlier on May 2, 1924 as a result of combining nine established local fraternities throughout the country.
The Beta Beta chapter of Theta Upsilon Omega would enjoy almost a decade of prosperity at Miami University and a beautiful fraternity house on the corner of S. Campus and E. Collins until suspended in 1933 by their national group for financial difficulties at the height of the Great Depression. The chapter ceased to exist a year later.
The fate of the Theta Upsilon Omega national fraternity would be similar and in 1938, as growth had stalled during the depression, merged with the larger Sigma Phi Epsilon which had been founded in 1901.
It is very important to include Phi Sigma Phi and the Beta Beta chapter of Theta Upsilon Omega in the history of OH Eta because of the alumni group they produced and the role they had in the early success and growth of SigEp at Miami in the late 1940's and early 1950's. This is a story repeated over time as the likes of William 'Doc' Gordon '57 & Bob Albright '51 and more recently Herb Glasgow '74 & Graham Mitchell '73 have maintained an alumni group that has worked hand-in-hand with the chapter to be one of the most successful at Miami known as 'Mother of Fraternities.'
